Force

The municipality of Force is located on the cusp of the Aso, Tesino and Tronto valleys, probably owing its name to this unique location. The old town, founded in the fifth century by the inhabitants of the neighbouring settlements to protect themselves from Goth and Lombard invasions, retains the grandeur of the Medieval castle, documented by some remains of walls and the San Francesco tower-gate built in the fourteenth century as a lookout point on the road that led to Ascoli from Force.

Entering via the San Francesco gate we encounter the church of San Francesco, rebuilt in 1882 but preserving traces of the Romanesque building in the belfry and the stilofori lions, today at the entrance of the rectory. In the main square there are eighteenth-century Palazzo Comunale, the collegiate church of San Paolo, an old Farfa church of which only the Romanesque apse remains, and the Palazzo del Priorato, alongside which a belvedere offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Sibillini Range and on the whole upper Aso valley.
