Montemonaco and its museums: art and history, myths and legends

The Museo di Arte Sacra is housed in the former church of San Biagio and exhibits numerous wooden sculptures from the town, including a number of very prestigious works such as the early 17th-century leather altar frontal and the Madonna del Soccorso, painted in 1521 by Giulio Vergati.

The Museo della Grotta della Sibilla is housed in Villa Curi. The museum uses art, historic books, parchments and even a slide that reproduces the route leading to the legendary cave to convey how art, history, literature, myths, magic and legends are constantly interwoven in a truly fascinating fashion.

Villa Curi is also home to the municipal historic archive, which conserves a parchment from 1452 that documents the excommunication (later revoked) of the priors and the entire community of Montemonaco for hosting some knights who practised alchemy and accompanying them to the Lake of the Sibyl (better known as Lake Pilato).
