Cossignano

The small village of Cossignano is at 400 metres in altitude, between the Menocchia torrent and the Tesino river.

The old town is just 15 sq. km in area and is enclosed by walls known as “Grottoni” for its characteristic cave-like structure.

The original fortifications survive in the Porta di Levante or Porta di San Giorgio gate, the latter name due to the image of the patron of Cossignano, Saint George, once found here.

The church of Santa Maria Assunta, in the Neoclassical style, is inside the urban walls. It was built in 1792 over  the old Farfa church of Santa Maria, and is decorated inside with frescoes by Dante De Carolis. There is also the Annunziata church, which was originally built in 1265 and which boasts an altarpiece by Vincenzo Pagani.

Outside the walls, on the other hand, we encounter a typical local old: the earth house. Recently restored, this  was built entirely with soil using a technique that involved the mixing this with straw. Also worth a visit is the “fonte di piano”, a barrel-vaulted water collection point used for watering livestock. Then there is Villa Trocchi, acquired in 1863 by Nicola Trocchi who converted the Massi family’s summer residence into an elegant mansion with a park, gardens, stables and barns.
