{"id":788,"date":"2014-04-15T10:41:06","date_gmt":"2014-04-15T10:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.youpiceno.it\/en\/?p=788"},"modified":"2014-04-15T10:41:06","modified_gmt":"2014-04-15T10:41:06","slug":"rotella","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.youpiceno.it\/en\/territory\/rotella.html","title":{"rendered":"Rotella"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Located on the <b>slopes of Mount Ascensione<\/b>, Rotella is an <b>ancient circular settlement<\/b>, a shape that is probably the reason for its name, which means \u201cwheel\u201d. The town belonged to Farfa Abbey from \u00a0the tenth century and the old part has retained its <b>Medieval appearance<\/b>, well documented by the remaining fortifications and monumental clock tower.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the historical centre, Rotella is worth visiting because it is close to Mount Ascensione, formerly known as the \u201cblack mountain\u201d due to the presence of <b>ancient chestnut groves<\/b> that are still a feature here. From Rotella village it is possible to <b>reach Mount Ascensione<\/b> along <b>various hiking trails<\/b>, and as well as offering vast and <b>wonderful views<\/b>, these paths reveal ancient <b>rural churches<\/b> or places of worship, testimony of the strong religious sentiment that underpins the local community.<\/p>\n<p>Just outside the town is the church of <b>Santa Viviana or \u201cdelle Icone\u201d <\/b>with precious polychrome stuccowork depicting the <i>Virgin and Child<\/i>. At the hamlet of <b>Capradosso<\/b>, along the path that leads to Mount Ascensione, it is worth seeing the Madonna della Consolazione\u00a0 shrine and the oratory church of Santa Maria in Verdiente.<\/p>\n<p>The <b>shrine<\/b> of <b>Madonna della Consolazione <\/b>or<b> Montemisio<\/b> is located in a small clearing at the foot of Mount Ascensione, and was built by the monks of Farfa on the ruins of a pagan temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis, and the origin of the <b>Festa delle Canestrelle<\/b>, which still takes place here on <b>15 August<\/b>, may be connected to this.<\/p>\n<p><b>Santa Maria in Verdiente<\/b> is a small oratory church with a rectangular plan and trussed roof, built by Farfa monks, \u00a0also in the fourteenth century. A precious cycle of frescoes attributed to the Master of Offida was commissioned by the Capradosso community during the epidemic of plague that hit the Piceno area in 1457\u201362.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, in the village of <b>Poggio Canoso<\/b> we find the church of <b>Santa Lucia<\/b> and the small church of <b>San Rocco<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Not far from the centre, in the <b>Mount Ascensione woods<\/b>, there is still an <b>old Franciscan <\/b><b>convent<\/b>, suppressed in 1650 and where tradition says that Saint Francis of Assisi spent the night.
